Gene is a seasoned strategist and innovation architect that has incubated several billion-dollar growth initiatives in the consumer space. Expert at building high caliber teams aimed at tackling ambiguous problems and accelerating partnerships centered on new businesses. He draws from diverse set of experiences encompassing 20 years of experience in strategy, finance, tech, and design.
Gene currently leads innovation at Target including it’s start-up engagement and investment programs spanning offices in San Francisco, Minneapolis and Bangalore (India) He is a member of the Retail Industry Leader’s Association (RILA) Innovation Council, is a TechStars mentor, and a limited partner in the Syndicate Fund (early stage venture fund). Gene also serves on the Board of Directors for Recycle Across America.
Prior to his current role, Gene led the corporate strategy practice at Target, where he helped design growth initiatives including new store concepts (CityTarget, Target Express, Open House), private brand label architecture (Up&Up) and helped reinvent some its marquee businesses. Gene also established the company’s first retail prototyping lab and co-championed its internal design thinking movement. He started his career in the robotics and automation industry where led new product engineering in the US.
Gene received an MBA from the Chicago Booth School of Business and holds an Engineering degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
